Inspire Those That Remain: After having purchased this feat, if your character pulls a Death Card from the Deck of Fate you may work with staff to ensure a fitting end to your character's narrative arc before retiring it. (1x/Character)

Can you kindly explain Staff's reasoning around why this a Feat for purchase, rather than being available to all players?

I think it's likely the same as why it was that way in all other Be Epic games.

Sometimes you just die. No epic last stand. Having everyone's death be epic and scripted cheapens it a bit.

Multiple reasons in no particular order other than train of thought:

• Avoids every single death that occurs being placed on a delay while we sort out how to do the character justice or simply make them go out in a blaze of glory. Guaranteeing everyone that we will do that for them handcuffs staff in what we can do in a couple of ways that I believe are not ideal as well as bogging down the in the moment logistics of a character death.

• Every player being guaranteed a satisfying end to their character arc reduces the stakes. It reduces the drive to accomplish your goals, the drive to have your character survive long enough to succeed at what they are trying to accomplish. That is not the environment we want to foster. There is something to be said for having the ability to die in obscurity or having failed.

• Codifying it as an option to save xp for and purchase allows those who want a completed meaningful narrative arc to their characters story specifically to have the insurance that they will get it. In the same way it allows those who either aren't concerned with it or specifically don't want to loose the things mentioned above to not be pushed into a situation upon their pulling a Death Card of having to specifically say in that very special moment "No, don't finish my story. Let me die in a ditch." which is not an ideal situation to be put in when you actually don't want that because of the weight of that choice. This takes the choice and applies it beforehand in the cool headed moment of looking at your computer monitor browsing feats.

• Having the feat available for purchase prevents players who die after only an event or two and happen to, sadly, die before being able to really make much of an impression on anyone becoming a headache for staff if they genuinely have no satisfying way of wrapping up a barely existent character arc. This is rare, but codifying the system towards who gets extra on their feet planning effort from staff AFTER a player has died in a way that the player needs to have specifically purchased a thing beforehand prevents logistical headaches staffside.

• Provides another incentive to get xp.

I can’t actually access the file linked above. My question is are we able to purchase feats going into game 1, meaning we’d start the game with a feat already?
