Character Prompt: The Lie

In an effort to be better about providing non-Slack users the chance to engage with various character exercises we’ve been doing on that platform, I’d like to make it a habit to share the ones I come up with here. Should be more easily rediscovered, at least!

So - a frequent staple of a character who develops is the lie that they believe. What is the lie your PC believes?

Alternatively, if that is too much in the realm of Find Out In Game: what is the lie your PC previously believed, how have they broken through to the truth, and what development has that prompted?

For example!

Decimus once believed that any Garians who remained under the Penance were either directionless sheep worthy of scorn or power-hungry manipulators worthy of hate. Just leave! So easy! Takes care of everything!
Except they have bonds and complicated lives and doubts like anyone else, and gods know how many reasons for staying within their society. Abandoning the Collective isn’t for everyone. Some people genuinely want to serve humbly! Some people (many of the DO, for instance) are even held in magical sway by true villains.
He needed to stop thinking he was so much better and judging people he barely knew.

As far as a lie he believes now? The implications of them being lies are terrible. He believes that Rilla is still in there somewhere; that he can raise Vengeance into someone as wise as she is strong; that he is strong and/or clever enough to put a stop to the practice of shaping Canvases without serious casualties. If any of them falter, it would be a really rough time for him.

Maybe staff would argue with me about whether or not this is a lie, but Charlie has bought into the lie of how to be Ostene. Everything she does is in effort to live that lie, but she isn’t even in Ostene any more because she kept missing the mark. Slowly, she is shaking herself free of it and learning that what makes you Ostene is not what she has been raised to think it is.
