With Skilled Foraging and Skilled Gathering:

I'm seeing that there are two options here for someone using this skill:

Option A
You get a random item from the chosen location, with a fixed rate of getting an unusual find based on how common unusual finds are at that location. 1/4 for Low or Very Low, 1/3 for Moderate or High.

Option B
You get one specific item listed for that location but have no chance of encountering an unusual find.

Is this assumption correct?

As a follow up, what does Keen Eye do to these odds?

Furthermore when you use a normal Foraging or Gathering skill, is there any chance of finding an uncommon find? Is it random and based on chance as opposed to a fixed rate, or is there just no chance?

I have answers!

First off: Skilled gathering should cost 2 days, not 1. But you probably figured that out. I didn't catch that in my last pass of the packet.

Option A:
You search for items as normal, with a normal chance of getting an unusual find. If you don't get an unusual find after 'gathering' 4 times (or 3 in some places) you automatically cash in your four/three common items for one unusual find.

Option B:
You have no chance of encountering an unusual find, but can pick which common items you want.

The normal foraging and gathering skills gives you a chance of finding an uncommon find based at random. We will literally roll dice and look up your results on a table based on which location you choose. The more common unusual finds are at the location where you are searching the better your chance of finding them.

_Let's example: you go searching with skilled foraging. You roll 10 times and get 3 unusual finds and _ 7 common finds. Four of the common finds go away and are replaced with one additional unusual find. You get 4 unusual finds, and 3 common finds.

Why is it twice as expensive for gatherers to get components as it is for the weaponsmiths and armourers? Is that a typo?

I think he just said that even advanced gathering is supposed to be 2 days and not one. But I am really curious as to why it’s so much harder to get items for permanent weapons vs. temp weapons.

I suspect the answer is “Because one is for temporary items which are consumable and you need more of them”.

Given that information though, it’s even more important that you and anne both focus on gathering starting out if we want to make enough weapons for everybody. But it also changes some of the strategy around with specialization and usage of days. May need to reconvene to think about that again.

VoodooSpecter pretty much said it. Permanent crafting components take more to get because they can be used to make things that are better.

A sword that calls “piercing” once per refresh is likely to be more valued than a potion or consumable that allows you to call piercing once.

Sorry let me clarify because i was asking a related but different question: a weaponsmoth can gather permanent components for 1 day of work. A gatherer can gather permanent components for 2 days of work. That seems off since gatherers are specialized and crafters are not. I get the permanent vs temporary that makes perfect sense, thank you for taking the time to clarify.

In this case now that I have the exact words in front of me:
Armorer and Weaponsmith has an basic skill called “Materials Collection” which gives them 1 metal, fiber or wood for 1 day of time
Vs
Gatherer has a basic ability called “Gather” which gives one random permanent material (wood, metal, or fiber) from a location for 2 days of time, with a maximum of a low chance of an unusual find.

As a gatherer trying to trade in permanent components to get other items, you’d essentially be competing with otherwise unemployed weaponsmiths and armorers, who would be able to out-produce you by double. My concern is that this will be economically frustrating for gatherers. It is possible that the system is balanced around the utility of unusual finds, in which case I retract my concern, I was just worried that this was a typo or just
